CMS again awards all three Asante hospitals five stars

Asante outperformed thousands of hospitals across the United States for overall quality.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently announced its 2021 Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings, and all three Asante hospitals again have earned five stars — the highest rating awarded.

The new ratings were posted April 28 on CMS’s Hospital Compare website.

Only 10 of Oregon’s 64 evaluated hospitals achieved a five-star rating. Nationally, just 13.5% of the 4,586 eligible Medicare-certified U.S. hospitals can claim this status.

“To earn this distinction so closely after learning that we’re again among the 15 Top Health Systems in the nation is truly an honor,” said Scott Kelly, Asante president and CEO. “This is proof of Asante’s sustained commitment excellence. It’s also a testament to the dedication of our clinical leaders, physicians, nurses, clinical staff members, those who work behind the scenes and every employee and volunteer who comes into contact with a patient.”

ARRMC and ATRMC have received the top rating four times since the overall quality ratings began in 2018; AACH has earned the recognition three times.

For its hospital ratings, CMS examines more than 100 measures under seven categories: mortality, safety of care, readmissions, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging.

Among other measures, Asante exceeded the national average for:

  • Heart attack response
  • Emergency Department response
  • Preventing C. difficile and central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI)
  • Preventing readmissions

The other Oregon hospitals earning five stars are St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton, Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario, Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center in Clackamas, Providence Portland Medical Center, Providence Newberg Medical Center, Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center in Tualatin and Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland.

“Being a five-star hospital four times is a reflection of every employee’s ongoing commitment to safety and excellence,” said Jamie Grebosky, MD, chief medical officer. “From following infection-prevention protocols to ensuring our patients recover safely at home, each one of you has helped Asante earn the reputation as a top-performing health system.”
