The first time Amalia Kieley visited Asante Ashland Community Hospital, she was just seconds old. Her birth at the hospital in which she is now the director of Nursing may account for her dedication to caring for patients here.
It is that dedication — and her commitment to excellence — that earned her a coveted annual Values in Action award, the highest honor given by Asante.
The list of Amalia’s attributes is extensive, and they predominantly focus on her team and patients: “She goes above and beyond the duties of her job to help her team; nothing is too big or too small for her to tackle; she excels at clear communication and being transparent; she’s honest with all her co-workers and speaks clearly and calmly so people feel assured and safe.”
Those are just a few of the comments made by Brenda Schweitzer, Asante staff development specialist, who nominated Amalia. “During an incredibly busy day, Amalia stopped her managerial role and became a charge nurse, orchestrating transfers, procedures on the floor, surgery admits and COVID-positive patients,” Schweitzer said. “She will be here early and stay late. Her team really is a priority and they know it and trust her.”
Amalia’s director, Amanda Kotler, vice president of Nursing at Asante Ashland and Asante Rogue Regional, echoes those sentiments. “Her nomination is an incredible testament to her character and her leadership.”
Amalia encouraged her team to attend CARE team sessions as a tool for the safe exploration of concerns, feelings, ideas and strengths. “Because of this, probably 50 employees have had an outlet to share and witness each other’s emotional experiences and develop resources together,” Schweitzer said.
Amalia constantly seeks feedback and ideas from her staff and co-workers, encouraging discussion, ideas and community building. “She supports her staff who come to her with new ideas and helps them bring their ideas to life,” Kotler said. “She has an amazing team who wants to work hard because she does – she is an amazing leader who has taken on so many challenges with grace and strength.”
