After a four-month leave of absence for health reasons, Asante President and CEO Scott Kelly announced his retirement from the organization on Monday, Feb. 13.

“This is by far the hardest message I’ve had to share in my more than two decades at Asante,” Kelly said. “I am constantly impressed by our employees, providers and volunteers who give of themselves every day for our patients and community. Leading this amazing organization and the people who bring it to life has been an honor.”

Kelly joined Asante 23 years ago to lead our strategy and marketing efforts. In the years that followed, he was promoted to increasingly advanced leadership roles, including CEO of Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, and executive vice president and chief operating officer of the health system before being appointed by the Board of Directors as our organization’s top leader in January 2019.

“I have known and worked with Scott for many years in my role as a board director. He is an intelligent, caring and dedicated leader, always striving to provide the best health care services to the people we serve,” said Peter Angstadt, Asante Board of Directors president. “I appreciate Scott and thank him for his exceptional service to Asante, and I will miss him.”

During Kelly’s tenure, Asante Rogue Regional was named a 100 Top Hospital and a 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital in the nation multiple years in a row. During his years as president and CEO, Asante was continuously named a 15 Top Health System in the nation.

“These remarkable achievements are shared and attained by everyone at Asante,” Kelly said. “I’m fortunate to have had the privilege of working with people who consistently put quality, safety and patient care first.”

When Kelly began his leave of absence this past October, Roy Vinyard was hired as the interim CEO to fulfill Kelly’s duties. He will continue in this interim role until a replacement is hired. “I greatly appreciate Roy for his commitment to return to lead our teams,” Kelly said. “I also want to express my gratitude for our executive team. They are an incredibly strong group of leaders who have held steadfast to our Mission and Vision while guiding Asante through some very difficult times.”

The Board of Directors’ search committee is working with a national recruiting firm to fill Kelly’s position. “We have strong teams and leadership at Asante which will allow for a smooth transition as we search for our next president and CEO,” Angstadt said. “Our board members thank all employees and associates for your dedication to our community. The past few years have been challenging and all of you have remained focused on providing excellent patient care.”

“Knowing that Asante is in good hands gives me comfort as I step away from this leadership role,” Kelly said. “Great employees make Asante exceptional, and you continue to be exceptional. For that, I thank you.”

  • Congratulations on your retirement Scott. I have been with Asante for 10 years this coming May. I started in Dietary and I have fond memories of your genuine kindness that you showed all of the employee’s. I now work in PFS remotely from home. Asante was like a family before Covid. Thank you for being a good leader and an example of the Asante values. You will be missed.

  • Scott, you are a class act, kind and respectful. You have always treated Katie Adkison, our hospice manager, with kindness and support. I know Katie appreciated your listening ear, and we always knew that you had our back. That is a rare quality, and deeply appreciated. I have no doubt your treat all you come into contact with the same way. Thank you for all your work. You are in my prayers.
