Virus season is approaching, let’s be prepared

From vaccinations to masking and standard precautions, be in the know — and in the right.

It’s fall, which means the start of cold and flu season — and once again the potential for a tripledemic. As we shared earlier, Asante is bracing for an increase in flu, COVID-19 and RSV and urging staff members to be prepared.

So far, prevalence of these viruses is relatively low in Southern Oregon, with just 1% for flu and no reported cases of RSV. COVID-19 cases have dropped to 15% positivity in recent weeks.

Let’s keep it that way.

Immunization

The best way to prevent the spread of these viruses is to get immunized.

  • COVID-19 primary and boosters are available at local pharmacies and soon in APP primary care clinics. Asante hospitals and Employee Health will not be offering COVID vaccines.
  • Flu vaccines are available at Asante Employee Health, local pharmacies (including Asante) and other retail outlets. Although Asante’s open flu clinics have ended, teams continue to round this month on Asante campuses. Remember, to comply with Asante policy, you must have received your shot or submitted a declination by Nov. 30. More in flu FAQs.
  • RSV vaccines are available for adults 60 and older at local pharmacies.

Masking

Asante is not currently requiring masking at any locations, but we continue to monitor local prevalence for all respiratory illnesses.

Unvaccinated employees will be required to wear a mask once flu season is officially declared, per Asante policy. We’re continuing to review the literature on best practices. Meanwhile, we support any staff member, patient and visitor who chooses to wear a mask, and will follow standard precautions to mask appropriately around patients experiencing respiratory symptoms.

Best practice respiratory season bundle!

  • Wash your hands.
  • Stay home when ill.
  • Get vaccinated if able.
  • Wear a mask when appropriate.
