John Reid, MD, burnished his reputation in sports medicine and orthopedics serving as physician for the U.S. Ski Team

Get to know John “Jeb” Reid, MD, who recently joined APP–Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine in Ashland.

What do you enjoy most about your profession?
The great thing about medicine is that it’s truly both an art and a science. I get to take care of people every day and get to know them. I go home at the end of the day with a real sense of purpose. It’s also a challenging career and at times humbling.

What do your patients like best about you?
I believe my patients feel I’m genuine, and know my intent is to help them. I’m very loyal and dedicated, and I try to figure out how their diagnosis or injury affects them personally and use that information to build a treatment plan.

Why did you choose to practice in the Rogue Valley?
Oregon has always felt like home to me. I went to medical school and completed my orthopedic residency here and was in private practice in Oregon before moving to Taos, New Mexico; where I was in academic medicine teaching and training orthopedic sports medicine fellows. After 15 years in Taos I was ready for a new challenge, and my wife was ready to come back to the West Coast.

What are your medical interests?
My practice has been mostly sports medicine, focused on knee and shoulder problems. I provide mostly arthroscopic and minimally invasive procedures as well as treat non-operative conditions. I also perform total knee and partial knee replacements.

How do you build relationships with patients?
It’s important to listen and understand what the patient is going through. When I’m building a relationship with my patient, first I want to get to know the individual, understand their culture and understand how the medical problem is affecting them. Then we can address the injury.

What do you do in your free time?
Our family loves outdoor activities. We ski a lot. We also bike, hike and camp. We love photography and cooking. I love to read and am fascinated with American history. I love dogs. My current best friend is a 2-year-old blue heeler named Banjo. He and I do everything together, and we look forward to exploring Southern Oregon. I’m also a huge classic car enthusiast with a passion for originality and patina!

What about you might surprise us?
I have been working with U.S. Ski Team for more than 15 years covering alpine races throughout North America and Europe as well as preseason training in the southern hemisphere.
