If a “sheriff” is calling you, beware

Scammers pretending to be local sheriff deputies are targeting Asante employees with fake subpoenas.

scam-alertA national scam has made its way to Asante. Scammers posing as law enforcement in Jackson and Josephine counties are calling employees claiming they missed an important court appearance or have failed to appear for a subpoena.

They claim a judge has issued a contempt of court order along with a warrant for the target’s arrest. The goal is to get you to send money to avoid arrest or a negative impact on your professional license. To keep you from asking for outside help, they may say that there is a gag order on the case. They may claim that you cannot speak about the matter to anyone, and that if you hang up on the call you will be considered a flight risk and may be arrested.

This is similar to scams targeting therapists and social workers in the Bay Area. The Jackson County sheriff’s office says they do not call people about missed court dates and never ask for cash, money cards or wire transfers.

Please let the legal team know if you receive any scam attempts or receive any communications about subpoenas. You can contact Berit Everhart, Colin Howard or Megan Samuelson.
