First a love story … “Then we met cancer”

Partners in mountain biking, Derek and Kim Budd face their steepest climb yet.

Amid the bustle of new construction, grand opening ceremonies and well-deserved praise for the philanthropy behind the new Mary and Dick Heimann Cancer Center are its patients.

One of them is Derek Budd, a husband and father in his early 60s who lives in Ashland with his wife of 33 years, Kim. After experiencing mysterious chest pain in 2019, testing revealed a harrowing diagnosis. Budd, an outdoor enthusiast and avid cyclist and runner, had Stage 4 lung cancer.

He and Kim share their story and their gratitude for having cancer care close to home.
