Yes, certain blue masks are safe for patient care

Surgi-Plus procedure masks are an approved PPE.

Safety and efficacy of PPE continues to be a high priority. Processes are established in supply chain to provide quality assurance, including Infection Prevention review and approval of masks used to prevent spread of droplet-transmitted illness.

Please note that the Surgi-Plus procedure masks with ear loops are safe for use while providing direct patient care. This means patient care providers will find blue masks circulating alongside the yellow masks. Screeners will continue to ask if you care for patients directly and will provide approved mask types.

Visitor and non-patient-care masks with ear loops will not be stocked in patient care departments. The product is appropriate for visitors and those not providing patient care.

As always, there may be product changes as we continue to seek out alternative PPE to ensure caregivers have the appropriate supplies. We will continued to communicate product changes that affect your work.

The yellow Medline mask is still acceptable for use in patient care areas and will be alongside this new Surgi-Plus mask until supply is depleted.

For use in patient care areas (including Medline yellow face masks with ear loops):

Face mask

For visitors and use only in non-patient care areas:
