Oct. 28: The impacts of COVID-19 and leadership on wellbeing

Asante’s Your Wellbeing at Work educational series features grand rounds presentations by Mayo Clinic’s Colin West, MD, PhD, in two in-person and online events.

“Impact of COVID-19 on Wellbeing”

The effects of COVID-19 on health care workers’ wellbeing has resulted in people leaving the health care setting or causing burnout among those remaining.

Burnout and staffing shortages can lead to poor patient care. Dr. West, MD, will discuss:

  • The areas of work-life model of wellbeing.
  • The impact of COVID-19 on health care workers’ wellbeing.
  • New strategies and skills to reduce burnout in a pandemic-impacted setting.
  • Improved patient outcomes as a result of improved wellbeing among staff and decreased staffing shortages.

Executive leadership recognizes the need to recruit and retain staff. Leadership skills at other levels are critical to the wellbeing of those they lead. This session will help executive leaders strategize to improve retention and help leaders at other levels gain skills to lead effectively. During this session, Dr. West will discuss:

  • New information on how leaders effect the wellbeing of those they lead.
  • New strategies and skills to promote wellbeing to improve staff morale and lead more effectively.
  • Improved patient outcomes as a result of less burnout among staff, which can improve staffing levels.

Colin West
COLIN WEST, MD, PhD

Dr. West is a professor of medicine, medical education and biostatistics at Mayo Clinic. He also serves as director of Mayo Clinic Programs on Physician Well-being and Employee Wellness.

Dr. West’s research has focused on medical education and physician wellbeing and has been widely published in prominent journals including Lancet, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine and JAMA Internal Medicine.
