Leader spotlight: Doug Ward

As part of a get-to-know-your-leaders series, APP introduces Doug Ward, vice president of Operations.

Doug Ward is a familiar face in APP. Doug started his career at Asante in May 2017 as the APP director of operations for Grants Pass. Since then he has served in a variety of leadership roles including the APP director of primary care and Vice President of Operations for APP.

Why did you decide to join Asante?

My family and I decided to look to move out of Southern California to find a better place to raise our family. We looked all over the nation, including Nevada, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington.  When we came to visit Asante, we fell in love with both the Rogue Valley and this incredible organization.

What’s special about APP?

It’s people. I work with collectively the best group of people I’ve ever met in my career.

How do you define leadership and what is your leadership philosophy?

Done right, leadership is about building groups of people who inherently want to do what is best for the organization and its constituents.

Doug Ward and fatherAs a child, what did you see yourself doing when you grew up?

I always pictured myself teaching and leading others.  However, whenever people asked, I thought being a firefighter sounded cool, so I would tell people that was what I wanted to be.

What would surprise people about you?

I don’t watch professional sports.  At all.  I love to do things, but I don’t have the patience to watch other people do things.  I can’t even tell you who played in the Superbowl last year.  It has made my professional development pretty difficult at times as I’ve had to fake my way through awkward conversations pretending to know or care about professional athletes.

Favorite book: The first book that really made me fall in love with reading was “Ender’s Game,” by Orson Scott Card.

Favorite music: It’s a little embarrassing and something else that would surprise people, but I love metal. The first time I listened to Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” album, it blew my mind. I was like, holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.  I’ve tried to soften my tastes and get into punk rock, old school ’70s funk, and even classical music, but just can’t deny how much I love metal.

Favorite hobbies: I love to surf and ride my dirt bike. That was a prerequisite when we were moving several years ago — it had to be close enough to both mountains and the ocean to keep playing. We found a good balance in Southern Oregon.

Favorite animal: I love dolphins. It’s fun to surf with dolphins, especially when they are playing in the waves with you.

What’s the wisest thing anyone has ever told you? My dad (pictured, above): “When you work, work hard. When you play, play hard.”
